VBS & SUMMER CAMP REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN
During 1950, the minister and session of Melville Presbyterian Church, West Hill organized a Sunday School in Centennial Road Public School. By 1957 this ministry needed someone to give more time to this work, and Mr. Fred Swann, student at Knox College, was appointed, beginning on April 1. In addition to worship services at Centennial Road, Mr. Swann began services and Sunday School in the West Rouge Public School on October 6 that year. The official erection (formation) of the congregation took place on Sunday, June 22, 1958 and the two groups were formally recognized as one congregation.
Rev. W. H. Fulton was appointed by the Board of Missions as the first ordained minister from September 1, 1959 until September, 1963. During those years, the first building unit was constructed and dedicated on November 29, 1962. Our Anniversary Sunday which is always the last Sunday before Advent was determined by that date. The year 1962 closed with a membership of 105.
The second minister, Rev. Homer McAvoy, began his ministry at Grace on October 1, 1964. His warm, loving approach to people made a great impact on the congregation. He left in December 1967.
The following year, 1968, the Presbytery linked Grace with St. David's Presbyterian Church on Danforth Road in Scarborough. Both congregations were experiencing financial problems. Rev. Everett Briard was appointed by the General Board of Missions to begin work on August 1 with his stipend being shared by the two congregations as well as the Mission Board.
In 1974 both congregations became one joint self-supporting charge, and issued a call together, to Rev. Briard, dividing the cost of minister's stipend equally between them. By 1978, both congregations became completely self-supporting which Presbytery approved on October 1, and Rev. Briard became minister to Grace Church, conducting two identical services on Sunday mornings, and a service on Sunday evenings.
Construction of the Sunday School addition was begun in late summer, 1984, and completed in 1985. Our focus was: 'By our Faith, it will Happen'. Dedication of the enlarged building took place on April 14, 1985, by the Presbytery of East Toronto.
During Dr. Briard's ministry, he and his wife Lorna were instrumental in establishing a vibrant VBS ministry, a very successful Just for You programme, a monthly Tuesday evening Ladies Coffee Hour, and a Friday morning Coffee with a Difference. Lorna also instigated the annual Ladies' Day Apart. Dr. Briard retired in January, 1997 and will be long remembered and appreciated for his spiritual guidance, compassion and untiring dedication, retiring in 1997 as Minister Emeritus.
In 1998 Grace called Rev. Phillip Robillard as their new pastor. Under his leadership, the second Sunday morning service was changed to a contemporary service. During his time at Grace, the Sunday School/Youth programs continued to flourish and Grace embraced the outreach program, 'Alpha'. Alpha offered the congregation as well as the community-at-large the opportunity to create and/or strengthen their relationship with our Heavenly Father. Rev. Robillard moved to another ministry in 2004.
On April 2, 2006, Rev. Christopher Jorna was inducted. After a short ministry, illness caused him to resign. Rev. Mona Scrivens, formerly Youth Director at Grace, was called as part-time Assistant Minister for a two year appointment, focusing on family ministry, and began this on September 1, 2008. In September 2010 the Presbytery of Pickering renewed that appointment for an additional year.
In December 2009, the congregation issued a Call to Rev. Joseph Gray who began his ministry at Grace Church on March 28, 2010. Extension of existing buildings was done September 2010 through April 2011, and included additional office, ministry and meeting spaces. A joyous service of thanks and dedication was held on April 10, 2011. Rev. Gray was also instrumental in expanding Grace's ministry to include an Urdu-speaking congregation as well as an Arabic-speaking congregation and retired from Grace in 2018.
On June 2, 2019 Rev. Alvin Kim was warmly welcomed as he began his ministry at Grace.
